    Follow Through X-Ray

X-Ray Barium Meal Follow Through (BMFT) is a contrast radiographic study used to examine the small intestine. The patient drinks barium sulfate, and X-ray images are taken at intervals as the barium passes through the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.

    Includes 4 Test Parameters

  • Technique

Timed radiographic imaging as barium contrast travels through the digestive tract.

  • Purpose

To evaluate the transit time and structural health of the small intestine.

  • Area Covered

The entire small bowel, including the jejunum and ileum.

  • Key Clinical Point

Used to detect Crohn’s disease, malabsorption syndromes, or small bowel obstructions.

  • Includes Test 5 Parameters

It means the radiologist "follows" the barium as it travels from your stomach through the entire small intestine.

It can take several hours (2 to 5 hours) as we wait for the barium to move through the long small intestine.

This test specifically focuses on the small intestine, including the jejunum and ileum.

Yes, it is a common tool for identifying inflammation or narrowings caused by Crohn’s disease in the small bowel.

Since it can take a long time, bringing a book or something to pass the time is recommended.
